Extrication Equipment from Fireman's Fund
Helps Save Three Lives
Extrication equipment purchased through a grant from Fireman's Fund was a factor in saving three lives in May after a three-vehicle crash near Dundee, Ore., according to responders at the scene. On May 11, grant recipient Dundee Fire Department responded to a high speed motor vehicle crash on Highway 99.
Witnesses estimated the first car was traveling around 80 miles-per-hour, when it lost control in a 55 mile-per-hour zone. The car crossed the median, became airborne and crashed into a second car, then collided with a third car.
Three victims were trapped upside down in their vehicle in the center of the highway, in need of rapid extrication.
"The Fireman's Fund grant assistance dramatically enhanced our ability to provide life saving services to the victims," says John Stock, Fire Chief, Dundee Fire Department. "The new rescue equipment allowed our crew to simultaneously operate two rescue tools from the same power unit without alternating use, changing out tools, or flipping any levers," adds Stock.
All three victims were extricated in under 30 minutes, and then transported to area trauma centers by helicopters — beating the "golden hour." The "golden hour" is a concept developed by R. Adams Cowley, founder of the world's first trauma treatment center, and considered the "father of trauma medicine." Crowley's research found that chances for survival dramatically increase when a patient is treated in an emergency room within an hour of injury.
The Dundee grant was directed to the department by Hilb, Rogal & Company (HRH), an independent agent representing Fireman's Fund.
