‘Into the Fire’ Update: New Grants Announced

Six more fire departments received thermal imaging cameras and other needed equipment from funds generated by the documentary film "Into the Fire" — bringing the total value of grants awarded to $180,000. Fireman's Fund and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) made the formal announcement at the Fire Department Instructors Conference in Indianapolis.

"We are pleased to be able to award more life-saving equipment to fire departments," says Ronald Jon Siarnicki, executive director of NFFF. "These modern tools not only benefit the communities the firefighters serve, but they help make firefighters safer — reducing accidents and fatalities."

Since DVD and "Into the Fire" T-shirt sales continue, there will be additional equipment grants in the future, according to Danielle Cagan, director of the Heritage ProgramSM.

"Grant recipients are chosen from the 1,249 proposals that were submitted previously. There is no need to re-submit applications for future rounds of 'Into the Fire' fund awards," says Cagan.

Additional Opportunities

Funded and presented by Fireman's Fund to educate the public about the challenges faced by firefighters, "Into the Fire" is a 70-minute documentary featuring firefighters across the country telling their stories. The film aired on The History Channel® in 2006 and 2007, as well as on local cable stations across the country.

If your local television station is interested in airing the film, Fireman's Fund can provide the film to the station at no cost and in their preferred format. Television stations should e-Mail Ron Mori at rmori@ffic.com for additional information. Bulk orders of 10 or more can be ordered by e-Mailing intothefire@ffic.com. Fire departments are using the DVDs in a variety of ways, including fundraising, firefighter appreciation and recognition gifts, and as educational information for community leaders.

Individual copies can still be purchased online via www.firemansfund.com/heritage. For each DVD sold online for $14.99, seven dollars goes to support the fire service. In the initial months after the film was launched, more than $20,000 in funds were directed to 1,800 fire departments across the country by Fireman's Fund, as a result of online DVD sales. Currently these funds all go to the "Into the Fire" fund at NFFF for national distribution, although fire departments can purchase the DVDs at a bulk rate discount and use them for local fundraising.

Numerous public screenings of the documentary have been held by Fireman's Fund, our independent agency partners and fire departments. To make these screenings as easy as possible for fire departments, Fireman's Fund sent hundreds of "playbooks" which share detailed tips and ideas with fire departments for using "Into the Fire" in their local fundraising efforts. The information is now available online at www.firemansfund.com/intothefire.

"Into the Fire" T-shirts are available at www.firehero.org and 100 percent is donated to the National Fallen Firefighters "Into the Fire" fund.
